The functions of different body systems

A complex system of organs, the digestive system serves to digest food and provide nutrients for fuel. The digestive system includes the stomach, mouth, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum and anus. Shea, 2002. It is responsible for breaking down and chewing food, and the mouth produces saliva that helps moisten the food. The muscular tube called the esophagus transports food from mouth to stomach. With the aid of stomach acid and enzymes, the stomach can store and further break down food. This is the area where the bulk of the digestive and absorption processes of nutrients takes place. The large intestine absorbs all remaining nutrients as well as water. The last part of the digestive system, the rectum or anus is responsible for removing waste products. To regulate the body’s functions, hormones are produced and released into the bloodstream by glands called the endocrine systems. This system consists of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal glands, and sex glands (Hiller-Sturmhöfel & Bartke,  2018).
