Model for Human-Earth Relationship

The Human-Earth Relationship Model (Brown and colleagues, 2019) is an ecological model which explains how humans impact the Earth. It also demonstrates how technology, population and affluence interact with each other to create the environment effects of human activities. According to this model, the main factors that affect the environment of human activity are population size and technology. These three factors are linked, and increases in population, technology, and affluence could lead to environmental degradation. Because it has direct effects on the environment, the greatest is population. Increased land use and increased water consumption are associated with greater amounts of resources. An increase in the population also leads to an increase in pollution and waste generation. This second model component is called “affluence”. It refers to higher consumption, as well as the increased use of technologically-advanced and resource-intensive goods. Affluence increases can lead to greater resource extraction and pollution.
