Poet, activist, novelist, dramatist, columnist, and actor from Joplin, Missouri, Langston Hughes (February 1, 1901 – May 22, 1967) was a prolific and influential American artist. Hughes is widely considered to be the Harlem Renaissance’s most important writer and one of the pioneers of jazz poetry (Miller, 202). He wrote about the famous time that “Negro” (after Harlem) was “in vogue”. Hughes, a prodigy child who was raised in Midwestern towns, became a successful businessman. When he was a boy, Hughes moved to New York. He eventually made it big in the business industry (Bagoo 2002). In New York City, he attended Columbia University, after graduating from high school in Cleveland. He didn’t finish school but he was well-known within Harlem’s art community and attracted the attention of New York publishers, initially with The Crisis magazine, then to books publishers. He completed his studies at Lincoln University later. Hughes has also written short stories and plays, in addition to his poetry. He has written several fiction books and also published them (Maitra, 2019,). From 1942 through 1962, he contributed a regular column of in-depth analysis to The Chicago Defender.
