Answer

Blank, H. (2012). Straight: An incredibly brief history of heterosexuality. Beacon Press.

Heterosexuality is so common and obvious that scientists don’t need to investigate it. Men’s desire for women is, by this reasoning, a given, since it is a necessary component of their biological existence. Straight, Hanne Blank’s book begins with this notion in mind. Heterosexuality is taken as a given in Blank’s analysis and criticism. It is well-known to anyone who studies the history and evolution of sexuality that Blank’s book’s central thesis states, as does any other study, that heterosexuality developed in the late nineteenth century. In socio-scientific terms, it resulted from an explosion of work that documented, analyzed, defended, and condemned sexual “deviance.” Victorian scientists used the phrase “natural, inborn, unchanging” to describe sexual behavior as a biological constant. It is a matter of sex that there are two sides to the story.
