When comparing authority and power in management, most people might mistakenly think that the two types of influence are interchangeable. Although there may be only small differences between them, they are very different (Daft, 2020). Power is the ability or capacity of one person to exercise will over another. Every worker, including supervisors, exercises some power in their workplace (Waters, 2021). Different powers are useful in different situations. A boss who forces an employee to adopt a particular way of working that he prefers is an example of the use of power in the workplace. Although they may want to take a different creative approach, he still does (Daft, 2020). A person in authority can pass judgment and give orders to others in a formal and often legal manner. A position of authority at work provides the opportunity to implement organizational change (Musgrove, 2019).
