The number of genes in a cell can vary depending on the organism, however, the average human gene consists of 3,000 base pairs of DNA. The human genome contains approximately 20,000 to 25,000 genes, each of which is responsible for producing a certain protein or enzyme for a specific cellular process (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2021). Additionally, some genes can have multiple functions, depending on the context. By analyzing the genetic blueprint of a cell, researchers can better understand the biochemical processes and identify potential genetic disorders. For instance, the genetic blueprint can be used to identify the underlying cause of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes (Hancock et al., 2018).
