The Staggering Racial Disparity in American Prisons

Before World War Two, the ethnic makeup of American prisons was around 70% white. A century later, that statistic has been turned completely on its head with the ethnic makeup of American prisons being about 70% African American and Hispanic. According to the National Research Council, “the large racial disparities in the U.S. criminal justice system are among the most pressing civil rights issues of our time” (Beckett & Western, 2016). Research conducted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 2011 revealed that African Americans were incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites, and Hispanic Americans were incarcerated at over twice the rate of whites (American Civil Liberties Union, 2021). This trend has been largely attributed to racial profiling, unequal treatment by law enforcement, and inequitable sentencing practices.
