Parenting styles and attachment

One child-rearing style that has been extensively studied is authoritarian parenting, characterized by high levels of control and strict rules, with little room for negotiation or autonomy (Baumrind, 2018). An authoritarian style may lead to an anxious or avoidant attachment style in children, as they may feel less secure and less able to rely on their caregivers for emotional support (Grienenberger et al., 2019). This may be due to the lack of warmth and emotional responsiveness displayed by authoritarian caregivers, leading to a lack of trust and a feeling of rejection in the child (Grienenberger et al., 2019). On the other hand, permissive parenting involves low levels of control and high levels of warmth and emotional responsiveness (Baumrind, 2020). This style of parenting may lead to a secure attachment style in children, as they feel able to rely on their caregivers for emotional support and feel a sense of trust and emotional connection (Grienenberger et al., 2019). Culture can also play a significant role in the type of attachment a child develops. For example, in collectivist cultures, where the needs of the group are prioritized over the needs of the individual, a child may be more likely to develop an anxious attachment style, as their caregivers may prioritize the needs of the family over the needs of the child (van IJzendoorn et al., 2019).
