According to Freud, personality is made up of three parts: the id, which is the source of our bodily needs, wants, desires, and impulses, especially those related to survival and pleasure; the ego, which is the part of the personality responsible for reasoning and controlling the impulses of the id; and the superego, which is the moral component of the personality and represents society’s values and ideals (Ring & Lawn, 2019). Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers developed the humanistic view, which emphasizes each person’s unique ability to grow and achieve their potential. This view of personality is self-constructed and continually evolving. The perspective emphasizes the importance self-acceptance as well as self-awareness for the development of healthy personalities. Raymond Cattell and Gordon Allport developed the trait perspective. It emphasizes individual personality differences. According to this perspective, personality is made up of a combination of enduring traits, such as extraversion and agreeableness, that are relatively stable over time and across situations (Ring & Lawn, 2019). The humanistic view of personality appeals to me because it stresses the importance of self-actualization and personal growth. Each person has the ability to be their best self and I think self-acceptance as well as self-awareness and self-awareness play a crucial role in that process.
