Comparing the Composition of Saturn and Earth

The composition of the planets in our solar system varies greatly. Saturn and Earth are two of the most well-known planets, and although they are both made up of mostly the same elements, the distribution of these elements differs greatly. Saturn is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium gas, while Earth is composed primarily of silicate rocks and metals (Haqq-Misra, 2020). Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, with a radius of 58,232 km (NASA, 2020). It is composed of 94.1% hydrogen and 5.9% helium by mass, with traces of methane and ammonia. The outermost layers of Saturn’s atmosphere contain large concentrations of hydrogen and helium, which is the result of gravity compressing the gas together (Haqq-Misra, 2020). Earth is the third largest planet in the solar system, with a radius of 6,371 km (NASA, 2020). The composition of Earth’s surface is dominated by rocks, with the core being composed primarily of iron and nickel.
