Take culture at the ‘occupational’ level and culture at the ‘multinational’ level and how they play out in the ‘corporate’ (or organizational) ‘level’ (setting.)Occupational cultures are themselves very strong. Leaders must become humbler and learn how to seek help from subordinates who know more. Occupations have cultures, nations have cultures, ethnic groups have cultures, and with globalization it is no longer about the not just going to be about organizational culture.Create cultural islands where people from different occupational cultures and national cultures can suspend some of the rules and talk to each other openly and honestly about differences; speak more directly on topics such as:• How we view trust…?• How we view authority…?• How we deal with ‘bosses’ who make mistakes…?• How ‘rank’ and ‘privilege’ is established…?• How we address one-another in the ‘chain-of-command’• How to create teams that work as a unit…?Individual Assignment (Individual):Cultural Islands: Write an Executive Summary (of not more than two (2) pages in length) regarding the concept of a ‘Cultural Island.’ Discuss the proposition of establishing a ’safe’ zone for members of work groups or teams talk about relationship with each other.Write this report within the context of ways in which members of teams from different cultures can explore common ground across occupational as well as other differences that influence their approach to work and workforce interaction.Explore ways that can help to bridge differences in education, training, language, and culture to better unite a team of diverse workers. These observations should be based on your experience in multicultural environments: work, school, or social.
