Self-fertilization

Self-fertilization is a form of reproduction used by plants and some animals where the individual is capable of producing offspring with its own gametes. It is also known as self-pollination, autopollination, or autogamy (Lloyd, 2016). Self-fertilization can occur in situations where the individual is isolated from any other possible mate, or when the fertilization is done with its own gametes, either through a part of the individual’s body or with the help of a third party (Li et al., 2020). This type of reproduction is advantageous for species that live in environments with limited resources and few mates, as it increases the chances of successful reproduction (Harris, 2020). Self-fertilization can also help perpetuate a species by preventing the loss of genetic diversity due to mating with closely related individuals (Li et al., 2020).
