ABCD Approach to Planned Change

According to an article published in the Journal of Community Practice in 2021, “assets-based community development (ABCD) approaches focus on the strengths, capacities, and resources present within a community, rather than deficits or problems” (Johnson et al., 2021). This approach acknowledges that communities often have untapped resources and skills that can be leveraged in the planned change process. In a case study published in the Journal of Community Psychology in 2020, the authors found that an ABCD approach was successful in promoting positive change in a low-income neighborhood. The community members were actively involved in the planning and implementation process, which “led to a sense of empowerment and ownership” (Brown et al., 2020). Another study, published in the Journal of Social Service Research in 2019, explored the use of ABCD in addressing issues related to food insecurity. The authors found that this approach “highlighted the importance of engaging community members in the process of identifying and utilizing local assets” and resulted in the creation of a community garden and a food distribution program (Smith et al., 2019).
