McGregor’s Theory X/Y or the McGregor Hypothesis is a theory of motivation in organizational behavior. This theory was developed in the 1960s. (McCormack et.al., 2020). Theory X states that employees will resist working and need to be forced, controlled and threatened with punishment to reach organizational goals. Theory Y on the other side assumes work is part of everyday life, and employees can self-direct and control their own actions. Taylor’s scientific approach to management is founded on the concept of subdividing work into smaller tasks. Each task can then be optimised using scientific methods.
