In her TED Talk titled Stories of Mental Illness – From the Inside, Elyn Saks, a legal scholar, recounts her journey with schizophrenia. She has spoken numerous times about the struggle with mental illness she has faced over the years. Schizophrenia can be described as “a complex chronic mental disorder characterized by symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior, and impaired cognition” (Patel, Cherian, Gohil, & Atkinson, 2014 ). These symptoms can be classified as positive or negative.
Positive symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and confusion. Negative symptoms, on the other hand, are characterized by poor performance or impairment of normal mental functioning.
