Describe the experience of sending the message—either via letter or email—to your representative(s). How did it feel to formally advocate on behalf of a policy to alleviate a social problem you have thoroughly reviewed? Did you write a letter or an email? Explain your reasoning. Describe how you constructed the letter. Use the Council on Social Work Education and American Child Abuse and Neglect

letter

Dear Member of Congress,

My name is Jane Smith and I am one of your voters for the 11th Circuit. I represent a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in our area called the Society for the Protection of Children from Abuse and Neglect (SPCAN). We work to combat child abuse and neglect through public awareness and legislation.

I am writing to draw your attention to the needs of children in our area. I believe you will have to deal with many legislative issues as part of your responsibilities. My request is that you give special attention to issues related to child abuse and neglect in the region and nationally. As I review your story in my capacity as a child protection officer, I am sure you share my concerns for the safety and welfare of children across the state and across the country. They are the most vulnerable members of our society and will be better served if we work together to protect them.

The statistics on child abuse and neglect in our country are staggering. According to Children Positive Care for Children, more than 4 million reports are received each year. Even more disturbing, 45.4% of children who experienced abuse and neglect were under the age of one (Fahrudin et al., 2016). Nearly similar statistics are recorded by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Reports indicate that only 3.4 million children have access to abuse prevention and recovery support.
