The Flow of Cerebrospinal Fluid within the Ventricles of the Brain

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colorless fluid contained in the ventricles and subarachnoid spaces of the brain and spinal cord. It is a critical component of the central nervous system (CNS), providing protection and nourishment to the brain and spinal cord tissue. The CSF circulates through the ventricles of the brain in a continuous cycle. The ventricles are four interconnected cavities located in the brain that are filled with CSF (Bock et al., 2019). The CSF is produced by specialized cells in the ventricles and is then absorbed into the bloodstream. The CSF begins its cycle by entering the lateral ventricles, which are located in the cerebral hemispheres, and is then carried to the third ventricle by the foramen of Monro. From here, it passes through the cerebral aqueduct of Sylvius and enters the fourth ventricle.
