Identifying the Structure of the Poly Gene in Drosophila melanogaster

The poly gene, located on the third chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster, is a large gene that is responsible for the synthesis of the enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in the fruit fly (Zhang et al., 2019). PPO is essential for the synthesis of melanin and the formation of eggshells during the development of the fly. Due to its importance, the structure of the poly gene must be understood. Research has been conducted to identify the structure of the poly gene in order to gain a better understanding of its role in the fly’s development. Studies have revealed that the poly gene is composed of four exons and three introns (Duca et al., 2016). The first exon is approximately 3.3 kb in length, while the other three exons range from 1.2 kb to 2.2 kb. The introns are relatively large, ranging from 11.5 kb to 13.7 kb.
