                                                                                                                              Christianity is one of the world’s oldest and most widely practiced religions, with an estimated 2.3 billion adherents in 2020 (Pew Research Center, 2021). While the earliest roots of Christianity can be traced back to the ancient Middle East, the religion has since spread to most corners of the globe through a combination of human migration, conquest, and diffusion (Funk, 2017). This essay will explore the origins of the religion, discuss how the forces of migration and diffusion played a role in its spread, and reflect on how Christianity has impacted my own family. Christianity originated in the Middle Eastern region of the Roman Empire known as the ‘Holy Land’ – or the ‘Hearth’ of Christianity (Funk, 2017). It is believed to have been founded by Jesus Christ and his followers in the 1st century CE, and over the following centuries, it spread to other regions of the Roman Empire through a combination of migration and diffusion (Funk, 2017).
