What are the Advantages and Drawbacks of Asymmetric and Symmetric Cryptographic Algorithms?

Both symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic algorithm have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Symmetric algorithms also known as private-key cryptography use one key for encryption and decryption. Due to its simplicity, this method of cryptography works faster than other asymmetric ones (Khan et.al., 2017; Dong, et.al., 2021).   However, there are some drawbacks to symmetric cryptography. The main disadvantage of symmetric cryptography is the need for the shared key to remain secure by all parties in the communication. It is used both for encryption and decryption. It is possible to establish secure communications with others if your shared key gets compromised (Azim and al. 2020; Patil and al. 2020).  Asymmetric cryptography (also called public key cryptography) uses two keys to decryption and encryption. Asymmetric cryptography, also known as public key cryptography, provides authentication and nonrepudiation, without the need to swap the private keys, which makes it more secure (Baiju, et al. 2018). Due to its complexity, however asymmetric cryptography can have a higher computational cost than symmetric and a slower speed.
