The phenomenon of groupthink occurs when people make decisions without taking into account other viewpoints and thoroughly analysing the situation. These can cause poor decisions and worse outcomes (Janis 2019). In order to help organizations better understand the problem of decision-making I use groupthink theory. This theory explains the potential pitfalls and importance of open communication and encouraging diversity within groups. Systems theory, however, suggests that an organization can be considered a complex system made up of interconnected components that work together in order to accomplish a common goal. (Bertalanffy (2018) This theory can be applied to an organization’s decision making process. It can help us identify which components influence the decision outcome and how little changes can cause ripple effects across the whole organization.
