Teaching confidence in groups

Group therapy is a very important part of the process. Confidentiality can pose a problem in groups. The risk that group members may reveal sensitive information to people outside the group is a concern (Corey 2018, 2018). The individual who divulged the information could be hurt or even put at risk. The facilitator may help to teach the importance of confidentiality within a group by setting clear guidelines and reinforcing them during the course. This might include reminding group members not to share information discussed in the group with anyone outside of the group and emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidentiality (Toseland & Rivasm, 2020)The age of the group members may impact how confidentiality is explained. Younger members might need explicit guidance and explanations on confidentiality. The duty to Report, or the obligation for therapists or facilitators to inform the authorities of any harm, or potential harm, to others, is also important (American Counseling Association (2014)).
