Special-Use Registers In Instruction Set Architecture
A special-use register is a set of processor registers that are unique to instruction set architecture (ISA). They can be used to store or maintain certain types of data and information which may need frequent access. They are often found in complicated instruction set computing, whereas they are absent from reduced instruction set computing. Special-use Registers also go by the names devoted registers and dedicated registers. Some of these registers are called privileged registers which are used by the operating system to perform privileged operations (Reddy & Kishore 2011). Indirect registers are one example of special-use Registers. They store the memory address necessary to load the next instruction. Additional special-use registers include condition code registers. These registers store information on the current condition and can be used to determine the next instruction if a branch instruction occurs. While some microprocessors use single bit registers for each condition condition code, others offer more complex and specialized condition code registers (Brahmakulam & Hanamtools 2015). These registers are more portable and efficient than standard-use ones. ISA provides platform independent programming. Developers can move their programs from one platform to the next while maintaining the same functionality. Special-use registers allow for optimization of commonly used hardware functionality at the hardware level. Special-use registers are crucial for ISA performance and portability.
