5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) are a class of drugs commonly used to treat prostate cancer. 5-ARIs work by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which is responsible for the breakdown of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, 5-ARIs reduce the amount of DHT available in the prostate, which in turn reduces the growth of prostate cancer cells (Zauderer, 2018).
