More user data is being used to enable better targeting, personalization and product recommendations as companies work to increase the value of their services to customers. Despite such good intentions, increased collection and storage of user data creates significant business obligations related to data security, privacy, and ethical data use (Ogbuke et al., 2020). Mishandling of user data can have significant financial repercussions and can have negative legal, social and even political repercussions. The Cambridge Analytica data scandal, for example, demonstrated how damaging the misuse of data can be, and the detrimental impact on a company’s operations and profits. Against this backdrop, companies in the digital age face the challenge of finding the right balance between implementing data analytics projects and maintaining appropriate security and data protection (Hawamleh et al., 2020).
