Key Components of Information Systems Information systems
The Key Components of Information Systems Information systems are complex arrangements of technology, people, and data used together to support operations, management and other aspects of an organization. These systems have five main components: hardware, software and data. Hardware refers to the actual physical elements of an information systems, which include devices such as monitors, computers and mobile devices. These devices allow information to be gathered, organized, processed, and provided (Lovett 2002). Also known as computer programs or software, these instructions tell the computer how it should function and what to do with information. Software can be divided into three types: operating system (Janes 2020), application software, or system software. Data can be described as the raw material which is transformed into usable information. It can be collected, stored, or retrieved electronically (Lin 2021). The pathways connecting the components of an information network and allowing data sharing are called communications. Both internal and external networks can be connected to the Internet. The system’s users allow people to interact with it, both to enter and retrieve data. An information system is useless without users (McCarthy 2019, McCarthy). It is essential that an information system works well and functions properly. To achieve optimal results, it is important to design the system correctly and manage it properly. References: Cain, W.
