Ancient Greek Views of Gods and Things Today

Ancient Greeks had a different view on the gods. They believed they were powerful forces that could control many aspects of life. The Ancient Greeks believed that everything around them was part and parcel of the divine. They believed gods were involved in all things, from the sun and moon to rivers and mountains. While we don’t see the Ancient Greek gods today, evidence can still be found of their influence on the everyday things that we do. If we gaze up at the sky at night, for example, it is possible to see the constellations the Ancient Greeks used as stories to assign the gods. Orion’s constellation was, in fact, often associated with Apollo the Greek god. Ursa Major, on the other hand, was associated with Artemis the goddess (Grima, Lulofs 2018). In addition, we can see evidence of the Ancient Greeks’ views of gods in the names of the days of the week; many of these days are named after the gods of the Ancient Greek pantheon (Faulkner, 2019).
