Homework: Collaborate on Wikipedia
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to …
View and appreciate the complexity behind the largest, digital collaborative writing platform on the internet
Collaborate with other writers asynchronously on Wikipedia by editing a Wikipedia article
Why? Digital collaboration and digital communication. Wikipedia is both a collaboration platform for multiple writers and a digital communication tool to share with readers. In the course so far, we have learned about asynchronous collaboration. Now, we will experience asynchronous collaboration. We will learn by doing and experiencing, rather than just by taking a test on “collaboration”—boring.
You have value to add! You have knowledge and expertise in some niche that can be shared with readers worldwide. Please share that knowledge.
Task A: Learn and Contribute
Watch the videos in this tutorial playlist. Watch at least videos #1-11 (30 mins), which you will need when you edit a Wikipedia page. I encourage watching all the videos to really learn and appreciate all the behind the scenes complexity of Wikipedia. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuC9_EqBCEM-yzf3jeFkRTf_zzlIoEuav

Create a Wikipedia account but DO NOT USE YOUR NAME. Do not use your name or any identifiable information as a user name. Protect your privacy. Consider a random user name unique to this assignment, e.g., “WriterAlpha007”. Do not use a user name you have used in the past on other sites. Alternatively, you may choose to edit a page without creating an account, but then your IP address will be recorded which could identify the town you live in. Be wise. Email address is optional. This video discusses the user name options.
Consider your knowledge strengths. Perhaps there is something you already know and can share. Perhaps there is something topic you want to research and then share. You choose the topic.
Contribute to Wikipedia. You should consider one of following ideas as possible contributions that count for this assignment.
Edit content of an existing page by adding at least two sentences of new content.
Edit at least two sentences to make the content clearer to understand, e.g.,
Make at least two grammatical edits: better word choice, reword a long awkward sentence, remove duplicate words, standardize capitalization, remove or add commas, etc.
add a reference or reference section to an existing page
create a new page on a new, niche topic
add at least two links from one wiki page to other Wiki pages to help readers jump to related content
add a photo to a Wiki page (required at least four days to autoconfirm your account)
Deliverable
Week 4Turn in Wikipedia evidence of Edits in the comments box, submit the URL to the “View History” page of the Wiki page you edit.
Include your Wiki user name with the submission so the professor knows which edits are yours.
Example: My user name is “Gog the Mild” and here is the view history https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Burnt_Candlemas&action=history
