How Many B-Oxidation cycles are required to complete oxidation of a 20 Carbon Fatty Acid
A series of B-oxidation cycle are required to complete the oxidation long-chain fatty oils such as 20-carbon ones. The process of producing energy-rich molecules like acetylCoA by cleaving 2 carbon units from the carbon chain’s beta position is called B-oxidation. Ten B-oxidation cycles are required to fully oxidize 20-carbon fatty acids. Every cycle releases two acetylCoA molecules as well as two hydrogen atoms. Each B-oxidation cycle starts at the carboxyl end in the fatty acids chain and goes on until it reaches the end. The four-step B-oxidation cycle includes four (4) enzyme steps. They begin with activation by Coenzyme A of the fatty acids and then proceed to the cleavage the two-carbon units. The cleavage proceeds to the oxidation and formation of a new Thioester bond. Finally, it releases the Acetyl-CoA molecular (Hou, 2021). Cont….
