Read and complete the “Applying Concepts” exercise on pages 576-577 of the uploaded textbook file. Then answer the following questions. Using evidence from chapter 11 of part IV and other course materials is, as always, required.

What assumptions about gender difference are embedded in Bem’s (1971) and Terman and Mile’s (1936) test? What does this tell you about the social construction of gender and the social construction of difference?

Why do you suppose we don’t talk very much about the tremendous similarity between genders? Or, why we don’t talk very much about the amount of variation within one gender group of “all men” or “all women”?

How might these areas of focus and areas we ignore relate to the dominant gender ideology in America?
