Kate Chopin’s “Desiree’s Baby”, a true story, tells the tale of Desiree and her black child with an enslaver. The narrative takes place in 1893. It illustrates racism at the time. After the child’s birth, his mother notices that he has strikingly black features. They are both blissfully unaware of their relationship for the first time, but they soon become happy. Desiree and her baby are unaware of their relationship until the color of Desiree’s baby’s skin becomes obvious. Her husband is not willing to talk about it. Chopin 2017, p. 445. “She looked like a rock image. She was still and silent after placing the item there” (Chopin 2017 p. 445). Desiree, at the request of her husband, goes into woods and finds a new spot. Desiree goes on her way, and her husband commands her slaves to light her possessions. His father was an African American descendant and the baby’s skin colour came from him. He discovered this while going through his mother’s belongings. Desiree is a white woman with a black baby.
