The Use of CRISPR-Cas9 System in the Morrison Lab

The Morrison lab at the University of Chicago has been utilizing the CRISPR-Cas9 system to study gene function and develop new therapies for genetic diseases. The CRISPR-Cas9 system is a gene editing tool that allows for precise and efficient manipulation of genes in a wide variety of organisms. This technology was first developed in 2012 and has since been used in numerous research labs, including the Morrison Lab. The CRISPR-Cas9 system works by introducing a specific guide RNA (gRNA) sequence into a cell that binds to a target gene. Once bound, the Cas9 enzyme cuts the DNA at the target site, allowing researchers to make precise and efficient modifications to the gene. The Morrison lab has used this system to study the function of genes related to cancer, Huntington’s disease, and other genetic disorders (Florell et al., 2016; Li et al., 2021).
The Morrison lab has also used the CRISPR-Cas9 system to develop gene therapy treatments for genetic diseases. By using this technology, they have been able to introduce healthy copies of genes into cells, allowing them to correct genetic mutations that cause diseases.
