The Regulation of Autophagy by Non-Protein Factors: A Focus from the Morrison Lab
Autophagy is an essential cellular process for the degradation and recycling of damaged or unwanted organelles and proteins within the cell. The Morrison lab has dedicated their research to understanding the regulation of autophagy by non-protein factors. According to a study conducted by the Morrison Lab in 2016, they have identified mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) as an important factor in the regulation of autophagy (Morrison et al., 2016). UPRmt is activated in response to stress or damage in the mitochondria, and modulates autophagy by promoting the expression of autophagy-related genes. Furthermore, the Morrison Lab has also studied the role of inflammatory cytokines in the regulation of autophagy. In a study published in 2018, the lab demonstrated that the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-? could modulate autophagy in a cell-type dependent manner (Morrison et al., 2018). The cytokine was found to induce autophagy in some cell types, but inhibit autophagy in others. In addition to UPRmt and inflammatory cytokines, the Morrison Lab has also investigated other non-protein factors that regulate autophagy. These include small molecules such as cannabinoids, fatty acids, and terpenoids (Morrison et al., 2019). Cont…..
