Chemical nicotine is found in cigarettes and tobacco products and can lead to addiction. Secondhand or environmental tobacco smoke, also known as secondhand smoking, contains nicotine and other dangerous compounds. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, non-smokers are at greater risk for lung cancer, stroke and heart disease if they smoke secondhand. Non-smokers are at greater risk of these health problems if they’re exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke every day (DiGiacomo and colleagues, 2019).
