Compiler Development Process
From Grammar to Scanner The development of a compiler starts with the creation of a grammar that identifies the language or notation to which it will translate. It is broken down into 4 main components: the lexical structure (syntax, semantics), syntax and syntax mistakes. Kang (2015). The scanner will interpret the lexical structure and use it to recognise the symbols and words of the language. A scanner, acting as a language-interpreter, is developed. This machine reads in the source code, converts it, and returns a set of tokens to the computer (Mohnen, 2020). The parser can then understand the meaning of each token and their interconnection. Once the parser and grammar are set up, code can be generated. The backend, which acts as an executor of the code, is also designed (Wiese 2021). Final steps include the implementation and testing of the compiler. Writing the generated code is followed by validating it. The final stage of a compiler’s development will involve optimization and debugging. In the end, developing a compiler requires a number of steps. References Bogdanov, P. (2015).
