Pyruvate Dehydrogenase: Reaction to Input Reactants, and Output Products
A complex biochemical reaction, the pyruvate-dehydrogenase (PDH) reaction occurs in the cells’ mitochondria. It is responsible for making acetylcoA from pyruvate and an integral part of the citric acids cycle. Many reactants and products are involved in the pyruvate-dehydrogenase process, which also includes cofactors or coenzymes. The input reactants in the pyruvate-dehydrogenase process are NAD+, CoASH, and Pyruvate. Three-carbon molecules made from carbohydrates are pyruvate and NAD+. CoA–SH is a coenzyme which helps shuttle acetyl groups, while NAD+ helps to oxidize acetyl groups (Lukasiewicz 2018, 2018). The pyruvate-dehydrogenase reaction produces three products: acetyl–CoA, NADH and CO2. AcetylCoA, a 2-carbon molecule, enters the citric acids cycle. NADH, a reduced version of NAD+ is then reoxidized into NAD+ within the electron transport chain. The reaction produces CO2 as a byproduct (Cesario, 2020). Cont…
