No-Till Techniques for Annual-Horticultural Field-Vegetable Cropping Systems: Benefits and Challenges

No-till techniques have been successfully integrated into agronomic cropping systems for a number of reasons, including increased soil fertility, reduced erosion, improved water infiltration, and increased organic matter (Govaerts et al., 2020). However, there has been limited research into the use of no-till techniques in annual-horticultural field-vegetable cropping systems. This is due to the fact that horticultural vegetable crops require intensive management, including frequent cultivation and irrigation, which is not compatible with no-till practices (Govaerts et al., 2020). However, there is evidence to suggest that no-till techniques can be successfully integrated into annual-horticultural field-vegetable cropping systems, provided that certain management strategies are adopted (Osti et al., 2021). For example, soil fertility can be improved through the use of cover crops, which can be mowed and left as mulch to act as a weed suppressant and to improve soil structure. Additionally, drip irrigation can be used to provide water with minimal disturbance to the soil (Osti et al., 2018).
