Computer Fraud Laws
Computer fraud laws and computer abuse laws can be used to prosecute and deter individuals who inflict harm on systems and steal data from computers. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, 1984, makes it a crime for anyone to gain access to a computer system without authorisation, in excess of authorization, and to use malicious code to cause damage and loss, including identity theft and privacy violation (Klvac 2018, 2018). The Wiretap Act, which also deals with computer hacking, is another law. The Wiretap Act, 1968, prohibits any unauthorised interception of electronic communications, including email messages, sent via a computer network (Cho. 2020). Computer-based criminals are subject to harsh penalties under both the CFAA (and Wiretap) laws. Each law criminalizes unauthorized access to networks or information, and the interception or unauthorized use of communications.
