Part 2 questions

no need for citing. In Part Two, we see massive government, economic, and political change take place in the British Empire as the nation became more liberal and global. Napoleon was gone, and threat of invasion from Europe dissipated to the point where Britain could turn and look inward. There was significant progress made in industrialization, trade, infrastructure, and political rights, but not without cost. Millions died or were further impoverished in a progress that can be viewed as only benefiting a few. Yet, Britain not only survived, but emerged stronger in the years 1819-1885. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s thoughts on the questions below!1). In the introduction to Chapter 4 (pg. 114), Vernon mentions a “revolution in government.” However, we do not see a throwing off of the Ancien Regime and the government’s power actually increased. What, in British economic and political structures, actually experienced a revolution? How did this happen and how did it bring about profound change?2). The Gospel of Free Trade was strong in 19th century Britain. What were the implications of free trade for Britons and other people around the world? How did it impact people’s lives inside Britain itself? What is Vernon’s view of free trade?3). Vernon mentions the “Liberal Political Economy” several times in chapter five. What was a LPE, and how did it contribute to the Irish Potato Famine?4). 19th century Europe was awash in revolutions, especially in the 1840s, yet Great Britain and her empire seemed to find a way to avoid the uprisings and civil wars taking place in other countries. We know that there was some sympathy for the other movements throughout Britain, and Marx and Engels even lived there, where the two wrote and published their ideas. Why do you think Britain avoid political and economic revolution unlike other places in Europe?
