Preparing for The Next “Big One”: An Analysis of the Virtual Earthquake Approach

Stanford University’s “Virtual Earthquake Approach” provides an impressive way of simulating the effects of an earthquake on a structure (Stanford, 2020). This approach allows the construction of a virtual 3D model of a building, which is then subjected to a simulated earthquake. This approach is interesting because it provides a way to analyze a structure’s ability to withstand an earthquake before it is even built, thus allowing for the modification of the structure prior to construction in order to better prepare it for the next big quake. Additionally, this approach also allows engineers to analyze the effects of an earthquake on a structure after it has been built, thus allowing for the implementation of modifications that would increase the structure’s ability to withstand an earthquake (Stanford, 2020). In order to prepare for the next big quake, I plan to research the local building codes and make sure that any structure I own or manage is built to the highest possible standards.
