How to Rewrite Memory: Neuroplasticity and the Role It Plays   

It is complicated to rewrite memories because of the interaction between genes, experiences, and changes in brain structure that happen with age. These changes collectively refer to as neuroplasticity, which is “the universal capacity of the brain to modify and adjust to incoming stimuli throughout life” (Merrill, 2020). Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to organize itself and make new paths, changing cognitive functions and creating new memories. (Sheldrake (2015) Our memories can be changed by repetition and practice.  Our brains can create new neural circuits to help us focus our attention on certain phrases or sounds by learning new skills, for example. The key to how memories are rewritten is through this process of rewiring (Egeland, 2021). Additionally, by creating meaningful connections between old and new stimuli we can incorporate them into our memory, and then use them efficiently.  Memory re-writing is fundamental to learning and growth that happens throughout your life. Both external stimuli (like experiences and lessons) and our internal characteristics, like genetic makeup, influence how we form and shape memories.
