The Interplay Between Cultural Differences and Environmental Conditions

Cultural differences between different populations of people can drastically shape how they interact with the environment around them. As the French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss notes, “Every society makes a selection of its environmental elements and turns them to its own use.” (Strauss, 2016). This selection process can be seen in a variety of ways. For example, in some areas of the world, certain species of animals are hunted for food and other resources, while in other areas, the same species are protected and venerated. Similarly, certain areas may have particular traditional methods of farming that are adapted to the local climate, while other areas may rely on modern industrial agricultural techniques. Conversely, environmental conditions can also shape how people in various cultural settings interact with their environment. For instance, in areas with extreme weather conditions, people may have to adapt their clothing and living arrangements in order to survive. As the sociologist Anthony P.
