The main obstacle to creating mental health programs around the globe is mental health stigma. Research by Zoppi & Harvey (2020) defines mental health stigma as social rejection or when society stigmatizes those seeking therapy for emotional discomfort or who have a mental disorder. People can feel pressured by friends, family, colleagues and others because of the stigma attached to mental illness, the World Health Organization (2022). People with mental illness may feel restricted from accessing care and able to integrate into society. This can lead to them not living happy, fulfilled lives. In this essay, I will be discussing my role as an undergraduate PMHNP student in eliminating or reducing stigma.

Stuart (2016) provides several interventions to combat stigmatization of mental health. First, social tolerance may be improved by raising awareness through participation in events to increase the community’s knowledge of mental health-related topics. To communicate health information to broad audiences, programs like literacy campaigns or mass media campaigns may be useful. It is possible to reduce stigma by increasing awareness about mental disorders, including warning signs and symptoms as well as management strategies and information on how to get help.
