BPD (borderline personality disorder) is one of three types of psychological disorders that are represented by TV/movie celebrities or actors. BPD, a mental disorder, is characterized as instability in interpersonal relationships and self-image. It can also affect emotions. (American Psychiatric Association (2018) Hannah Baker (from Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”) is the character who first displays symptoms of BPD. Hannah has severe mood swings and is prone to impulsive behaviour. It also makes it difficult for her to maintain stable relationships with other people. Hannah also suffers from a deformed self-image, and engages in self harm as a way to cope with her emotional distress (Yates 2018, 2018). Joker from “Joker” is the second character. Hannah has similar characteristics to the Joker, which includes impulsivity, instability in relationships and poor self-image. He also experiences intense emotional reactions and displays erratic behavior, such as lashing out violently (Phillips & Silver, 2019). Marilyn Monroe is the third celebrity to show symptoms of BPD. Monroe had issues with self-esteem and relationships. She also experienced intense emotions (Grob 2020). BPD sufferers should receive both pharmacotherapy as well as psychotherapy. BPD treatment is based on evidence. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (DBT) are two examples. (American Psychiatric Association (2018) DBT, a type of psychotherapy that helps people with BPD to manage their emotions and better their relationships, is one form.
