Amazon is a global giant with an estimated market capitalization of $1 trillion (£810 billion), employing more than 850,000 direct employees worldwide and shipping to more than 100 countries. It has expanded its product portfolio into technology development by bringing in Amazon Robots, data through Amazon Web Services, and Amazon Commerce (similar to Amazon Retail, but for businesses and other organizations, including local governments and educational institutions) (Blakeley, 2019 ). Many now consider it more than a “everything store” (Rushe et al., 2020). It is also well known that Amazon’s business model violates workers’ rights in various ways, actively opposes unions, minimizes tax contributions, and uses its position to suppress competition and evade inspections. The coronavirus outbreak has boosted Amazon’s market cap. The company’s revenue hit $75bn (£58bn) in the first quarter. However, as their incomes increase, so do reports of hazardous working conditions in their operations centers around the world (Bray, 2021). In the US, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Germany and the UK, workers are sounding the alarm and unions are demanding better. When Amazon hesitated or refused to implement key safety measures to reduce the risk to these essential workers, a strike was organized to enforce the issue. continue…
