The Effects of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Domestic Policies
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Roosevelt) is the longest serving president of the United
States, he served from 1933 – 1945 throughout most of the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s
approach was unlike anything we see in society today He enlisted advisors with clashing
temperaments and beliefs to the same policy issue (Leuchtenburg, 2009), they would give their
ideas to solving America’s problems and then Roosevelt would weigh this with his morals and
wheat congress thought would be best for the people. This caused some contradictions in policies
but overall made a longstanding stamp on America and boosted the economy. Due to Herbert
Hoover the predecease president to Roosevelt it was clear that he had to make urgent changes in
American policies to stimulate the economy. When he entered office he took immediate actions
within the first ‘hundred days’ by having congress pass numerous policies to improve banking,
unemployment, agriculture and. Roosevelt’s actions are known as the ‘hundred days’ as the
moment he stepped into office from March to June of 1933 he took immediate action to remedy
the imminent concerns facing the SZmerican people on a daily basis.
America has seen great victory and loss in its history, one of the saddest times is the
“Worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from 1929 to 1939”
(HISTORY, Great Depression). When Roosevelt entered office in 1933 the unemployment rates
had grown to over twenty five percent of the nations workforce, more than twelve million
Ameicans were out of work. (Leuchtenburg, 2018). As the unemployment rates coy toonies to
drop Roosevelt had to take action quickly as the lack of work was causing families to lose their
housing, food and heating. During his ‘hundred days’ he had to solve the imminent crisis of
starvation and the desperate need to improve the nation’s unemployment rates. He stated “our
nation’s debt is after all internal debt not only owed by the nation but to the nation” (Historical
Impressions, 1998). He made the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) which was
in charge of making direct cash allocations accessible to states to provide the unemployed with
enough to feed, house and warm their families. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) put
300,000 your men to work in 1,200 camps cleaning benches, planting trees and building bridges.
As well the Civil Works Administration (CWA) spent nearly $1 billion on public work projects,
including airports and roads (Leutenberg 237). Admittedly these make work projects did not
contribute largely to american society it allowed many families to earn money to stay afloat and
these sculptures are still seen and enjoyed in the twenty-first century
