The Calvin Cycle: An Overview of the Three Stages of Reactions

The Calvin Cycle is a set of biochemical reactions that occur in plants during photosynthesis. It is also known as the dark cycle or C3 cycle, due to the fact that it involves three carbon molecules. This cycle begins when carbon dioxide is released from the atmosphere and fixed into a 3-carbon compound. The process then involves three main stages: Carbon fixation, reduction, and regeneration. Each step is essential in order for photosynthesis to occur, and these stages have been studied for decades (Herai et al., 2016; Miao et al., 2021). In the first stage, carbon fixation, carbon dioxide is converted into a 3-carbon compound. This is done by the enzyme RuBisCO in the presence of light. RuBisCO utilizes the energy from the light to catalyze the reaction. The 3-carbon compound is then used in the second stage, reduction. This involves the conversion of the 3-carbon compound into a carbohydrate, such as glucose. The third stage, regeneration, results in the production of a 5-carbon compound. This 5-carbon compound then regenerates the 3-carbon compound so the cycle can begin again (Herai et al., 2016; Chen et al., 2021). Cont….
