Mitigating Earthquake Impacts in the Caribbean

Earthquakes in the Caribbean region have caused tremendous destruction and loss of life since 1692. To reduce the impacts of future earthquakes, a combination of structural and non-structural mitigation measures should be implemented. Structural measures involve the construction of buildings and other structures that are designed to withstand seismic forces, such as retrofitting existing structures with earthquake-resistant features. Non-structural measures include land use planning, disaster preparedness and response, and public education about earthquake hazards (Garcia-Fresca, 2020; Gokceoglu et al., 2017). Structurally, seismic retrofitting is a cost-effective measure which involves reinforcing existing structures to make them more resilient to seismic activity. This can be accomplished in various ways, such as bracing walls and columns, reinforcement of masonry, and strengthening non-structural elements (Gokceoglu et al., 2017). Additionally, new structures can be designed and built to meet specific seismic codes, which will ensure they are more resistant to earthquakes (Garcia-Fresca, 2020).
