Understanding the BC Dairy System through Béné et al and McDonaldization

The BC Dairy system can be explored through the four narratives put forward by Béné et al. (2019) which are “Feed the future world population”, “Inability of system to deliver healthy diet”, “Equal and equitable benefits” and “Unsustainability of the system and impact on environment”. Additionally, McDonaldization (Ritzer, 2013) provides an additional analytical framework to examine the BC Dairy System in terms of its efficiency, predictability, calculability and control. The BC Dairy system is focused on feeding the future world population in that it strives to produce enough dairy products to meet the demand of the province. This is especially true as BC is the third most populous province in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2020). Furthermore, the system is efficient in that it produces dairy products in a cost-effective manner. Dairy farms in BC are small-scale which keeps production costs lower than large-scale operations in other parts of the world (BC Ministry of Agriculture, 2017).
