 By the summer of 1974 the scandal regarding the break-in at the Watergate building threatened Richard Nixon’s presidency. After secret White House tapes revealed that Nixon had ordered a cover-up, many members of Congress called for the impeachment of the president. Realizing that he had lost the support of his party and the American public, Nixon chose to resign rather than face impeachment and trial.
